Ashley's Story She is 13 Years old and lives in Edgewater, MD.
She is a softball player for the Riva Angels. During a game she noticed pain in her knee, at first her parents thought it was a sprained knee so they took her to night time pediatrics. The doctor there told them she had a muscle virus and it would just have to run its course. A week later the condition worsened and they took her to her pediatrician. The blood work came back a week later. Her doctor directing them to take her to the Washington children’s hospital immediately. Her parents were baffled by this but never the less were in the car within the hour to the emergency room at children’s. When they got there the doctors had her in a room within an hour and doing more blood work, within two more hours her parents were greeted by another doctor telling them thier daughter had Leukemia. To their amazement she took it like a trooper, she was admitted and they started the testing, after the blood tests and the iv’s and the bone marrow test they still could not confirm the type of leukemia she had, she was literally scheduled within the hour for them to operate and install the port when the second bone marrow test results came back and they were able to determine she had Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. This type could be treated with oral medication but were still unclear of side effects and length of treatment and if there was a cure or not. That following Monday, Ashley wasn’t feeling well. They quickly admitted her to the hospital, where they did blood transfusions and antibiotics and fluids, this was the worst anyone had seen her. It seems like some weeks she does great and with a snap of a finger she could be right back in the hospital, for now she seems to be doing ok and her 3 year old sister has just been tested for a match on bone marrow, this is the only cure, so we are all praying for the match. The doctor told us that if her little sister is not a match they would not peruse an outside donor, which would leave Ashley on medication for the rest of her life, The expense of this particular medication is enormous. We have set up an account in Ashley’s name for any money donated to reserve for her care.
